Info: The MONROE: 392/1800 Cassette Drive System expands the programming and storage capacity for 1800 series calculators.
It features automatic program control, allowing users to break large programs into 256-step blocks to exceed standard memory limits,
with the system automatically loading subsequent blocks as needed.
The 392/1800 system enables access to over 38,000 programming steps per tape side, with the capability to repeat up to 150 blocks until program completion.
Furthermore, a single C30 tape cassette is equivalent to 150 individual magnetic cards, streamlining data reading and writing processes.
The system’s interface assembly offers both READ ONLY and READ/WRITE ports, allowing the 1800 calculator user to selectively control the connected tape drive.
Reading and writing operations can be done with single or dual tape cassette drives.
However, dual drives make updating information easier, more convenient.
The 392/1800 Tape Cassette Drive System can be used with any MONROE 1800 series calculator for storage of information, giving expanded capabilities many users require.

Tape drives may be operated manually by touching the appropriate sequence of keys on the 1800 keyboard, or the 1800 may be programmed to operate drives automatically as part of the applications program.
Preconditioned Tapes are an attractive extra.
Preconditioning divides the tape into the number of blocks specified by the operator.
Each block is assigned a number in sequence beginning with one.
Automatic Error Checks:
The 392/1800 system automatically checks for error conditions which affect operation or data information. Conditions such as: comparing sum of bits read with bits written; whether read/write head is past block requested; attempted read of block with no data; and preconditioning errors.
Add-on capabilities through peripherals expand the system. Peripherals such as the Monroe Model I/O Writer or MONROE: 395 Teleprinter Interface can be used with the 392-1800 system,
allowing alphanumeric information to be written on or read from tape.

Basic 392/1800 Drive Functions — Functions which can be accessed manually or under program control. Users can:
- write a block of information on tape as part of multiple block file,
- write a block of information on tape as single block file,
- read a file of information from tape, using address recorded on tape to determine where in computer memory each block should be stored,
- read a file of information from tape into specified address in computer memory (addresses recorded on tape are ignored),
- specify which drive information to be read from under manual or program control.
